Luxury car sales in top gear, but hatchbacks hit the brakes
BMW Electric SUV X1, tagged at Rs. 66.90 Lakh, got sold out within 3 hours of the Launch in India. Similarly, Mercedes Benz sold all the 25 units of AMG G63 Grand edition of price Rs. 4 crores within 6 minutes of opening bookings.
On the other hand, sales of a once very popular model of Maruti Suzuki Alto halved year on year in the quarter ended in September 2023.
This is indicating that nowadays Indians (especially young generation) would be preferring to luxurious cars rather than too much worrying about cost of ownership.

This is a good news for some of our NVH colleagues working on high end passenger cars where they will not be constrained during their refinements by cost of subsystems or components (some examples mentioned below )
Torsional Vibration damper [TVD] or Dual Mass Flywheel [DMF]
Silent Tyres
Large volume silencers with sound absorbing glasswool
Hydra-mounts
Wheel-hub motors or double stage E-axles
Active noise cancellation
Of course, they will be on and above the scientific efforts w.r.t. other vital solutions (some examples mentioned below )
· Optimization of engine & body mounts, suspension pivots, clutch for their linear or torsional stiffness & damping
· Propeller shaft & Fan balancing
· Body sealing and its structural stiffening along with chassis / suspension components
· Tuning of ECU or motor calibration
Acoustic Insulation on firewalls & other body-trims
· Lower DIN class of gear manufacturing, etc.
These design & process solutions should not increase the vehicle cost to much a higher level, but the Management will need experts and hard working Engineers who will be given adequate time for Design of experiments.
In conclusion, for the best luxurious feel inside the car-cabin against all power-train-road-wind noise, there is no free lunch , right ?
