Vibrations speak language of Machines

"Smart" Maintenance of Assets thru' vibration monitoring is a need of time for safety, productivity and effectiveness of large scale machineries and plants.

Maintenance 4.0 now extends beyond preventive to prescriptive one with the help of IOT, AI/ML.. Here, experts from various Industries pointed out that 80 % of problems

are captured by Vibrations of rotating machineries (along with temperatures). To handle huge data, Cloud computing is getting deployed which will enable the Engineers remote monitoring as well as taking quick counter-actions in case the vibration RMS levels exceed specified targets.

The Vibrations (and ultra sound waves) are at the front side of the entire condition monitoring; if their abnormalities are overlooked, system-degradation followed by a total failure is inevitable as seen from a below well known diagram :

In this Bangalore conference, experts informed us that above such vibration monitoring is done for all road-bridges for road-bridges as the heavy vehicles pass over them. If the vibration levels are high, remedial actions get initiated. In India, not a single bridge is monitored this way though some research work has got initiated..

Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, appealed to the audience in his inaugural speech to focus on design of system from minimum vibration point of view. He shared his past experience with prevention of electronic part failures in the space crafts with special rubber isolators adopted at the mounts. In various projects at ISRO, he observed that to withstand large acoustic loads, the rocket body panels need to follow "mass" controlled strategy rather than stiffness or damping rise.

Council of Vibration Specialists (CVS) India has laid out a plan of action to consider the vibration engineering as one of the important fields for students, academic and Industry leaders.

Since all noise is basically air-borne vibrations, CVS is helping Automotive NVH refinements to flourish!
